CHESTER, Pa. –
Eliza Newlin and
Kayla Herr each registered one goal to help lead the Widener University field hockey team to a MAC Commonwealth victory against the Stevenson Mustangs at Edith R. Dixon field on Saturday afternoon. The Blue and Gold remain undefeated with a 4-0 record in conference and improve to 10-3 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With not much action offensively in the first half, Newlin was able to find the back of the net in the 23rd minute to give Widener the 1-0 lead. Newlin fired a one-timer past the keeper after rebounding a deflected shot that was taken by Jackie Daniels.
- Entering the second half strong, Widener earned a penalty corner 30 seconds after the whistle blew. The Pride then held possession in the attacking third for the next six minutes and registered five shots.
- Shortly after two shots from Newlin, Herr stepped up by creating her own space and taking on four defenders in the circle to find an open opportunity and put the Pride ahead 2-0.
- Widener outshot the Mustangs 3-0 for the remainder of the half, not allowing them any offensive opportunities.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Widener outshot the Mustangs 14-2 and had a 7-2 edge on penalty corners.
- Tied with one other team, Widener is currently the only undefeated team in the MAC Commonweath conference with a record of 4-0.
- This is the first time Widener has been undefeated in conference since before 2007.
