CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) – Sophomore
Dylan Pratzner (Wallingford, Pa.) found the back of the net in the waning minutes of regulation to lift the Widener University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Neumann on Saturday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Both teams had numerous opportunities to score throughout the match until Pratzner came through in the 81st minute. After nearly heading the ball home at the midway point of the second half, the sophomore capitalized on his next chance by finishing a cross from freshman
CJ Ciarrocca (Bordentown, N.J.) to give the Pride the lead.
Neumann (0-2) nearly netted the equalizer a minute later when Abu Donzo took a through ball and only had senior goalkeeper
David Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) standing in his way. Widener's netminder, however, made a key save by coming out and disrupting the play. The veteran's stop proved to be a difference maker and allowed the hosts to eventually escape with their first win of the season.
Sousa picked up his 12th career shutout by making seven saves for Widener, while Neumann's Shane Smith was tagged with the loss despite redirecting nine shots.
Widener (1-1) continues its four-game homestand to start the season when it entertains Swarthmore on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
