Field Hockey Dealt First Loss at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) – Immaculata scored twice in the second half to prevail over Widener by a 2-0 decision in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Field.

Widener dominated a scoreless first half and did not allow the Mighty Macs to attempt a shot over the first 35 minutes of play. The Pride attempted five shots, including four on target, but could not slip the ball past goalkeeper Sarah Pasternak. Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) had two attempts on the cage and nearly scored in the waning minutes before the break, but her strike was turned away at the last moment by defender Haley O'Donnell.

The Pride continued to pepper Pasternak with shots and threatened to score throughout the second half. The Mighty Macs' goalkeeper, however, came up big and got some big help from her back line with Megan Wheeler and O'Donnell combining for three defensive saves in the opening 11 minutes of the frame. By Widener's offense being kept at bay, Immaculata (2-0) was eventually able to take advantage of its limited opportunities and got goals from Cayla Williams and Brittany Robertson in the 41st and 61st minutes, respectively, to escape with a win.

Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) made one save between the pipes in the losing effort for Widener, which outshot the hosts by a 14-5 margin and had a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners. Pasternak earned the shutout by redirecting seven shots, and the Mighty Macs also recorded four defensive saves.

Widener (1-1) returns home to host Drew on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
