Field Hockey Blanks Drew; Herr Scores Twice

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2016) – Junior captain Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) found the back of the net twice for the first time in her collegiate career to lead the Widener University field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Drew on Wednesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.

After a penalty stroke clanked off the post early in the opening half, Herr put the Pride on the board in the 21st minute off a penalty corner when she finished a pass from sophomore Sarah Quintus (Drexel Hill, Pa.). The junior then doubled the lead shortly after by sending another rocket to the back of the cage after receiving a cross from freshman Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) just 6:42 later to give the Pride the insurance they needed to earn their second win of the young season.

Senior Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) earned her first shutout of the fall and fifth of her career for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a lopsided margin of 25-3 and had a commanding 22-5 advantage in penalty corners. With a strong back line led by senior Dana Adamson (Warrington, Pa.) and Quntus holding its ground, Ninos only had to make one save for the hosts. Drew's Ryan Callaghan suffered the loss despite turning away seven shots, while Michele Pozyc recorded a defensive save.

Widener (2-1) continues non-conference action when it visits Neumann on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
