Women’s Soccer Bettered by Sixth-Ranked Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2016) – The Widener University women's soccer team fell to nationally-ranked Swarthmore by a 4-0 score on Wednesday evening at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (8-0) came out with a vengeance and scored three times in the first half. Hannah Lichtenstein opened the scoring when she stole an inbounds pass and shot a rocket to the upper 90 of the net just seven minutes into the match. Brittany Weiderhold doubled the advantage by finishing to the left post in the 13th minute, and Katie Dougherty tapped in a header near the goal line off a cross from Caroline Khanna in the 31st minute to make it 3-0.

Widener (2-2-2) had an opportunity late in the first half when Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) took the ball into the box through the left side. The Swarthmore defense, however, forced her outside and the sophomore's shot attempt went wide left of the goal. The Garnet would then tack on an insurance marker which came off the foot of Marin McCoy to produce the final outcome.

Amy Shmoys made two saves to pick up the victory between the pipes for Swarthmore, which has not surrendered a goal through eight matches this season. Widener's Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) finished with seven saves in the setback.

The Pride will face another tough test when they visit #19-ranked TCNJ on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
