CHESTER, Pa. (Sept 21, 2016) - A late goal by freshman
Sam Scoma (Blue Bell, Pa.) was not enough as the Widener University field hockey team fell to Delaware Valley by a 2-1 decision on Wednesday evening at Edith R. Dixon Field.
After a scoreless 24 minutes, Delaware Valley's senior Stefania Swider found the back of the cage to break the game open. After six back-to-back penalty corners, Scoma put the Pride on the board in the 50th minute by finishing off a cross from
Meredith Benson (Clifton Heights, Pa.) to bring the game to a 1-1 tie. But minutes later, Carlie Baldus capitalized off a rebounded shot to help the Aggies regain the lead in the 60th minute.
Widener fought to the very end, firing off three shots and earning three penalty corners with a player down and only five minutes left on the clock. The Aggie defense, however, stood tall and would not let anything get past goalkeeper Rosie Bishop.
The game was back-and-fourth with Delaware Valley outshooting Widener by a count of 12-10. Pride goalkeeper
Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) made a valiant effort by tallying a total of three saves, while Delaware Valley's Bishop turned away two shots.
The Pride (3-3) will host Hood on Saturday, Sept 24 at 1 p.m.
