CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2016) – Freshman
Alyssa Dionisio (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted her first collegiate marker in the waning minutes of regulation to propel the Widener University women's soccer team to a 4-3 comeback victory over Eastern on Thursday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium. The Pride rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second half to win their season opener in thrilling fashion.
Eastern (0-1) appeared to be in control of the match and went ahead by a 3-1 score in the 54th minute when Emily Cole, the team's top scoring threat, took a through ball from Alondra Cervantes and finished on a breakaway opportunity. Cervantes was credited with the assist on the play.
Widener (1-0), however, stormed back by netting three unanswered goals in a span that lasted just over 15 minutes to seize the lead.
Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.), who put the Pride on the board with a breakaway goal in the first half, led the offensive barrage by factoring into all of the markers during the hot stretch to cap a career evening. The sophomore sparked the rally by scoring in the 69th minute before setting up freshman
Bella Abrams (Reading, Pa.) in the 78th and Dionisio in the 84th to put the Pride ahead and complete the valiant comeback effort.
Errico became the first player to factor into four goals in a match since Karen Thomas accomplished the feat by contributing three goals and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of Lycoming on Oct. 11, 2013. The Pride also netted four goals as a team for the first time since the defeating the Warriors three seasons ago.
Freshman
Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) picked up the victory between the pipes for Widener and made seven saves in her collegiate debut. Eastern's Adrianna Rowlands turned away five shots in the losing effort.
Widener continues a four-game homestand when it hosts Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 5:00 p.m.
