CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 20, 2016) – Junior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.) and senior Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) combined to net eight goals, including five in the second half, to propel the Widener University men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win in a pivotal game against Albright on Wednesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium. With the victory, the Pride punched their ticket for the upcoming Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament.
 
The first quarter was competitive with the teams trading goals throughout the frame. Tim Taylor put the Pride on the board just 10 seconds into the contest after sophomore Anthony Paone (Warrington, Pa.) won the opening faceoff, but Albright had a quick answer at 13:22 when James Egleston capitalized on a man-up opportunity. Sophomore Chris Drake (Morristown, N.J.), however, netted his first goal in a Widener uniform at 1:40 to give the Pride a 3-2 lead after one quarter, and classmate Mitchell Phillips (Wyomissing, Pa.) gave the Pride a 6-4 halftime advantage by finding the back of the net with just over a minute left in the second.
 
After Albright sliced the Widener lead in half on another Egleston goal that made it 6-5 with 10:56 remaining in the third, the Pride went on a scoring spree to put the game away. Junior Vince Marra (Morton, Pa.) and Schulte each scored a goal in the third, and Tim Taylor padded the lead by netting three in a row during a short span of 1:40 early in the fourth to give the hosts an 11-5 cushion. With the game already out of reach for the Lions, Schulte and senior captain Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) added insurance tallies to seal the final outcome.
 
Tim Taylor finished with six points on four goals and two assists to lead the way for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a 39-30 margin and most notably won 15 of the 24 faceoffs to gain extra possessions. Paone scooped up nine ground balls, while freshman goalkeeper Matt Horton (Emmaus, Pa.) turned away six shots. Sophomore John Ferguson (Springfield, Pa.) helped anchor a defense which did not allow any of the Lion starters to find the back of the net.
 
Albright (5-8, MAC Commonwealth 4-2) was paced by James Egleston, who netted a hat trick and also finished with one ground ball and one caused turnover in a reserve role. Ryan Aler made seven saves between the pipes.
 
Widener (6-6, MAC Commonwealth 5-1) will next face Arcadia at home on Tuesday, Apr. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
