Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Strong First Half Propels Men’s Lacrosse Past Arcadia

CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 26, 2016) – Senior Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Drew Amsley (Carlisle, Pa.) each netted a hat trick as the Widener University men's lacrosse team used an 11-goal outburst in the first half to run past Arcadia by a 16-6 score on Wednesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

A one-hour delay to the start of the game due to thunderstorms in the area did not slow down the Pride. Senior captain Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) scored an unassisted goal just 1:19 into the game to ignite the offense which would net 11 unanswered in the first half. Tim Taylor would then lead the charge by factoring into four of the markers, while the defense being anchored by Pat Keller, John Ferguson and Matt Drake was impenetrable and did not allow the Knights to attempt a shot through 30 minutes of action.

Widener led 11-0 and had a commanding 32-0 advantage in total shots in the first half, but Arcadia came out of the break with new life and scored three unanswered to open the third. Nick Ferraro scored at the 13:45 mark and set up a marker scored by Jay Horner less than two minutes later before Ryan Green made it 11-3 with a goal at 6:45.

But despite surrendering their double-digit lead, Widener was able to net two quick goals in the fourth to move ahead by 11 and create a margin that would be too much for the Knights to overcome. A man-up goal scored by freshman Kevin Kerby (Scotch Plains, N.J.) with 2:14 remaining added insurance and allowed the Pride to record their fourth straight win at home.

Tim Taylor and Amsley each finished with three goals and one assist to lead the way for Widener, which outshot its opponent by a 54-12 margin in the contest. Sophomore Shane Cook (Lincoln, Pa.) caused five turnovers and picked up five ground balls.

Arcadia (3-12, MAC Commonwealth 1-6) got a hat trick from Horner despite suffering a lopsided loss. Nick Ferraro contributed two goals and one assist, while Danny Lipkin made six saves in a strong relief effort between the pipes.

Widener (7-6, MAC Commonwealth 6-1), which has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, will wrap up the regular season when it visits Stevenson on Saturday, Apr. 30 at 7:00 p.m. The winner will earn the top seed for the league's annual postseason event which begins the following week.
