Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Outlasts Mary Washington, 11-10, on Taylor’s Late Goal

CHESTER, Pa. (March 5) – Senior Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) found the back of the net in the last minute of regulation to propel the Widener University men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory over Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

With the game deadlocked at 10-10, Widener successfully cleared the ball and set up its offense with a minute remaining and a golden opportunity to score a go-ahead marker. Working from the left side, senior captain Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) found Taylor down low to put the Pride up by one with 47 seconds left.

Despite losing the ensuing faceoff, Mary Washington forced a turnover and had one last chance to send the game into overtime by quickly clearing the ball to the other end. Owen Dingman's attempt, however, went wide, and Widener survived to pick up its first win of the season.

The entire game was tightly contested and neither side led by more than a goal throughout the contest. Even though Widener got on the board first on a strike by junior Tyler Schulte (Southampton, N.J.), the Eagles led for most of the first half by drawing penalties and cashing in on a pair of man-up opportunities. Davis and Noah Dewey each scored with the extra player with 4:41 left in the first and 13:24 remaining in the second before Dewey tallied another score at even strength to make it 4-3 and keep the Eagles ahead.

Widener, however, fought back and netted three unanswered goals between the second and third quarters to gain control. Freshman Drew Amsley (Carlisle, Pa.) registered his first career marker by finishing a pass from classmate Brady Franks (State College, Pa.) to knot the score at 4-all heading into the break, and LaVine followed by unleashing a rocket that landed in the upper 90 of the net at the 13:27 mark of the third to allow the hosts to seize the momentum. The strike by the senior captain gave the Pride a lead they would never relinquish.

Senior Tyler McClary (Galena, Ohio) came up with 10 saves in the cage for Widener, which was outshot by a 47-31 margin in the contest. LaVine finished with four points on one goal and three assists, which included setting up the game-winning marker, while Taylor, Schulte and Amsley each netted two goals apiece.

Mary Washington (2-3) was paced by Davis, who netted a game-high five goals in the losing effort. Sam Wasson turned away 12 shots between the pipes.

Widener (1-2) resumes action when it visits Dickinson on Saturday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m.
