Women’s Basketball Falls to Nationally-Ranked Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2016) – The Widener University women's basketball team fell to #17-ranked Muhlenberg by a 75-38 decision in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Saturday evening at Memorial Hall.

Muhlenberg (2-1) led from wire-to-wire in the contest and only faced one tie in the early stages. The Pride were competitive at the beginning and only found themselves trailing by a 21-15 score in the second quarter when freshman Angelica Borja set up junior Nikki Petri for a 3-point field goal, but the Mules closed out the quarter with 20 unanswered points to build up a 41-15 cushion heading into the break.

The Mules stayed in control throughout the second half. After Chelsea Gary opened the scoring in the third quarter, the hosts would not allow Widener to come closer than 20 the rest of the way. The margin grew to as many as 41 on a layup by Madison Kirchofer before Borja later closed out the game with a bucket on the other end.

Muhlenberg was led by Gary, who earned Tournament MVP accolades after registering a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. She also blocked four shots. Sara Dilly and Emily O'Mahoney each joined Gary on the all-tournament team after combining for 13 points for the host Mules, who had 15 different players score in the contest.

Sophomore Emily Hardy (Lewisberry, Pa.) paced Widener in the setback. The post player scored four points while also posting two career highs with 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. Freshman Madison Ireland (Garnet Valley, Pa.) added six points by shooting 3-of-5 from the field and also earned a spot on the all-tournament squad.

Widener (1-2) will regroup and be back in action to entertain Marywood in its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7:00 p.m.
