GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 22, 2016) - The Widener University men's soccer team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth match to nationally-ranked Messiah by a 4-0 decision on Saturday evening at Shoemaker Field.

Messiah (13-0-3, MACC 6-0-0) came out strong and scored three times in the first half. Jacob Bender opened the scoring off a free kick in the 16th minute of play, and then two more goals were scored by Nick West and Zack Bosshard in the 32nd and 43rd minutes to end the half. The Falcons would then tack on an insurance marker in the 82nd minute, which came off the foot of Jonathan Groothoff to produce the final outcome.
 
Connor Bell picked up the victory between the pipes for Messiah without having to make a save. Widener's Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) finished with 10 saves in the setback.
 
Widener (3-10-2, MACC 1-4-1) will regroup and face Arcadia at home on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Seniors Tommy O'Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) and Sousa will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the match.
