CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2016) – Sophomore
Logan Musselman (Coatesville, Pa.) scored his first collegiate goal as the Widener University men's soccer team played Alvernia to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at Alvernia's Turf Field.
Musselman opened the scoring early in the fourth minute of the first half, capitalizing off a turnover by Alvernia. Widener, which carried a 1-0 lead into the break, continued to earn scoring opportunities. Tyler Arnold, however, found the back of the net late in the second frame to force the match into overtime.
Widener dominated the first extra session by unleashing one shot and attempting two corner kicks. However, the team came up empty on its chances and the match was extended. Alvernia (3-10-1, MAC Commonwealth 2-2-1) had its opportunity to put the match away in the second overtime, but senior
Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) came away with a key save to preserve the tie.
Alvernia's Zach Rider and the Pride's Sousa both turned away six shots in the draw. They also combined for three saves in the overtime.
Widener (3-9-2, MAC Commonwealth 1-3-1) resumes action on the road against ninth-ranked Messiah on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
