CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2016) – The Widener University volleyball team fell to Cabrini by a 3-0 score on Friday night at the Nerney Field House. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.
Widener rallied from an early three-point deficit in the opening set and took a 15-13 lead when senior
Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) set up sophomore
Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) for a kill to prompt a Cavalier timeout. The Pride remained in control and went ahead by a 20-16 score when junior
Lauren Daly (Springfield, Pa.) and Barbieri teamed up for a block, but the hosts scored the next four points and ended the set on a 9-2 run.
The Pride once again built up a lead in the second set and were cruising with a 10-3 advantage following three straight attacking errors by Emily Shannon. But the Cavaliers once again rallied from behind. Anne-Marie Jones notched a kill to give Cabrini a 15-14 edge before Shannon ended the set with a kill.
Cabrini carried the momentum it built up into the third set and never trailed the rest of the way. A kill by Kelly Guarino made it 7-3, and the margin would grow to as many as six before the Cavaliers would eventually come away with the three-set win.
Barbieri paced the Pride in the loss by providing a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. Daly contributed a career-best six blocks, while senior
Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) finished with 21 digs.
Emily Stokarski and Guarino led Cabrini (10-12) with double-double efforts. Stokarski contributed 34 assists and 15 digs, while Guarino ended the match with 14 kills and 19 digs. Jones led all players with three service aces.
Widener (10-15) returns home to face Neumann for its annual Dig Pink match tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. during Homecoming Weekend.
