CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2016) – The Widener University women's soccer team fell to Stevenson by a 3-0 score in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Saturday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Widener had several good scoring opportunities throughout the match and beginning at the midway point of the first half. Sophomore
Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) sent a through ball to
Alyssa Dionisio (Philadelphia, Pa.), but Mustang goalkeeper Tiffany McKee came out and stopped the Pride freshman from finishing.
The visitors then used that momentum to get on the board shortly afterwards, as Brianna Christie finished a pass from Alayna Roesener in the 27th minute. The marker came following an attempt by Alexis Siejack that bounced off the crossbar.
Stevenson (4-4-1, MAC Commonwealth 1-0), which led by a 1-0 score at the recess, tacked on two more goals in the second half. Jordan Porretto capitalized on a rebound off a Pride defender in the 51st minute, and Kailee Ziegler added insurance by heading home a corner kick taken by Brittney Celano just 3:15 later.
Widener continued to find ways to chip away at the deficit and nearly found the back of the net in the 71st minute when sophomore
Gabrielle Campbell (Mickleton, N.J.) unleashed a shot which was headed to the upper 90. McKee, however, made the save to help preserve the shutout.
McKee earned her second clean sheet of the season by making three saves for Stevenson, while the Pride's
Jenna Keating (Havertown, Pa.) turned away six shots in the loss.
Widener (2-5-2, MAC Commonwealth 0-1) will travel to Maryland to face Goucher for its final non-conference contest of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
