GLASSBORO, N.J. (Sept. 5, 2015) – The Widener volleyball team continued its action at the Profs Invitational on Saturday in Glassboro, N.J. The Pride split a pair of five-set matches, first defeating Kean before dropping to host Rowan.
After dropping the first set 25-10, the Blue and Gold battled back to a 25-23 victory in set two against Kean. Falling behind 23-18 late in the set, the Pride clawed back for the final seven points to take the win. Two straight kills by freshman right side
Kierston Forney (Manassas, Va.) sealed the 25-23 score.
Kean would fight back to take set three by a score of 25-19, including scoring the final three points capped off by a Kendall Sonico service ace, but Widener would not go down easy taking the final two sets by scores of 25-17 and 15-12.
Freshman outside hitter
Nicole Dorman (E. Norriton, Pa.) led all players with 13 kills, while Forney chipped in nine and fellow freshman
Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) added eight. Junior setter
Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) ended with 41 assists, and classmate
Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) led the Pride with 14 digs as the libero.
In the second match, the two squads were evenly matched throughout the five sets. The first set had to go to 29-27 before Widener won the set as back-to-back Prof attack errors clinched the victory for the visitors. Rowan then opened the second set with five-straight points before Dorman smashed a kill to end the run. The home squad won four of the last five points capped off by a kill from Erica O'Hagan to secure a 25-20 win in set two.
The Pride answered with a 25-20 victory of their own in set three as Dorman was once again in the thick of things, knocking down the final kill for the Blue and Gold. Rowan then took the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 17-15 to earn the five-set win.
Dorman and O'Hagan were the kills leaders for each side, with both tallying 14 apiece. Barbieri tossed up 40 assists, and Elliott scooped up 23 digs. Dorman also recorded 21 digs and Barbieri had 19 so both players managed a double-double.
The Pride return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 as they open up Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play. They host Messiah for a 7 p.m. match-up in the Schwartz Center.
