Volleyball Battles Through Day One of the Rowan Invitational

GLASSBORO, N.J. (September 4, 2015) – The Widener volleyball team earned a split decision at the Rowan Invitational as they defeated Mount Saint Vincent, 3-0, and dropped a heartbreaker to Michigan-Dearborn, 3-2.
 
In the first match of the day for the Pride against Mount Saint Vincent, the squad earned a three set sweep. The Blue and Gold won the first set 25-19, while squeaking out a 25-22 second set victory and finished the Dolphins in the third set with a 25-20 victory.
 
Junior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) recorded a team high 16 digs for the Pride.
 
Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) finished with a team high ten kills on 26 attacks. The freshman added seven digs, one assist and one service ace in the victory.
 
Junior Sabrina Barbieri (Media, Pa.) notched 34 assists and three kills in six total attacks against the Dolphins. The junior setter also recorded six service aces and six digs in the match.
 
Sophomore Lauren Daly (Aston, Pa.) finished three-for-five on total attacks in one set.
 
In the nightcap for the Pride, Dorman led the Blue and Gold in both kills and aces, as they fell to Michigan-Dearborn, 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 31-33, 25-14, 14-16). The freshman notched 18 kills, 12 digs and three aces in the five set battle.
 
Freshman Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) added ten kills and 11 digs in the match.
 
Barbieri finished the night with 47 assists, ten digs and one block against the Wolverines. Elliott finished the match with a team high 36 digs for the Pride.
 
Widener will be back in action on Saturday as they are set to take on Kean (11:00 a.m.) and Rowan (5:00 p.m.) on the final day of the Rowan Invitational.
