Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Herr and Rodgers Lead Field Hockey Past Stockton in Overtime

CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore Kayla Herr (Lancaster, Pa.) scored a goal in the first half and set up the golden marker in extra time to lift the Widener University field hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Stockton on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Herr put Widener on the scoreboard just 1:02 into the match by firing the ball into the cage through a scrum of players in front of the goal. Sophomore Eliza Newlin (Lewisburg, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the play.

Even though the Pride held a commanding advantage in shot attempts in each half, Stockton (1-6) was able to push one past Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) when Sarah Fisher finished a pass from Alicia Belko. The equalizer would eventually force overtime.

In the extra session, Widener had the first chance to score when Herr rifled a shot that was saved by Emily Sorochynskyj. After the Ospreys were unsuccessful on a penalty corner, freshman Kelly Rodgers (Oaklyn, N,J.)  slotted in the game-winning goal after taking a cross from Herr to give the Pride the sudden victory. It was also her third marker in the last two games.

Ninos made three saves to earn the victory between the pipes for Widener, which had a 16-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-8 edge in penalty corners. Stockton's Sorochynskyj suffered the loss despite turning away nine shots.

Widener (5-3) returns to action when it visits Alvernia on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1:00 p.m.
