FREDERICK, Md. – Freshman
Kelly Rodgers (Oaklyn, N.J.) scored twice to help propel the Widener University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Hood in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opener for both schools on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Thomas Athletic Field.
Widener (4-3, MACC 1-0) got on the board in the 14th minute when Rodgers took a cross from
Dana Adamson and buried the ball into the back of the cage. The Pride doubled their lead in the waning minutes of the first half when sophomore
Eliza Newlin (Lewisburg, Pa.) blasted a shot into an open goal shortly after a penalty corner.
In the second half, the Pride continued to dominate as the defense did not allow the Blazers to attempt a shot. Rodgers finished a pass from freshman
Sarah Quintus (Drexel Hill, Pa.) in the 48th minute to make it 3-0, and junior
Kaelei Renzi (Mantua, N.J.) added another score shortly before time expired on a reverse strike to allow the Pride to run away with the four-goal win.
Junior
Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) earned the victory by only having to make one save for Widener, which held a commanding 30-1 advantage in total shots and attempted 10 of the game's 12 penalty corners. Hailey Poisal of Hood (0-6, MACC 0-1) turned away 11 shots in the losing effort.
Widener returns home to face Richard Stockton on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
