CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Sara Corson found the back of the net twice to lift Rutgers-Newark over Widener by a 2-1 decision in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Widener had the first opportunity for both teams to score when freshman
Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) had a good look and blasted a rocket that sailed just high of the crossbar midway through the opening half. Rutgers-Newark, however, found the back of the net first when Corson headed home a cross that came from sophomore Nicole Gomez. The senior headed the ball off the left post and it deflected in off Widener senior goalkeeper
Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, Pa.) in the 42nd minute.
The Scarlet Raiders doubled their lead in the 67th minute with Corson finding the back of the net again for what would stand as her national-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season. The senior took a through ball from Cristina Estremera and beat Pfautz in a one-on-one situation.
Widener (3-4-1), however, continued to battle and was able to slice the deficit in half when Errico took a short pass from sophomore
Lara Houck (Hughesville, Md.) and buried a shot from the top of the box. The Pride could only manage a corner kick opportunity the rest of the way before time ran out.
Goalkeeper Diana Carvalho picked up the victory without having to make a save for Rutgers-Newark (8-2) had a 9-8 edge on shot attempts and a commanding 7-1 lead in shots on target. Pfautz turned away five shots in the setback for the Pride.
Widener has the weekend off and returns to action when it visits Eastern on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
