Softball Makes it Seven-Straight with Sweep at Lycoming; 5-1, 2-1

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2015) – Behind a career-high 14 strikeouts by sophomore hurler Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) in the opening 5-1 victory, the Widener softball team swept a pair at Commonwealth-foe Lycoming after picking up a 2-1 win in the nightcap at the Shangraw Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Widener hit the 20 win mark on the season, improving to 20-4 with the win and 12-2 in conference play.  Lycoming dips to 14-12 overall and 4-8 in league action.

The Pride did not waste any time getting on the board in Game One as sophomore third baseman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., N.J.) crossed the plate for the day's first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior right fielder Heather Forward (Philadelphia, Pa.).  During the next at bat, sophomore designated player Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) came home after a Warrior error on a steal attempt.

The visitors doubled their lead in the top of the fourth as Forward scored on an RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) and junior catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, Pa.) followed in the next at bat with a single through the left side to plate freshman centerfielder Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.).

The home squad found its way on the board in the bottom half of the frame on a solo shot off the bat of second baseman Caroline Lapano.  But Widener got the run back for Schengrund in the very next inning as junior shortstop Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) scampered home on yet another Warrior miscue.

Schengrund tossed a gem in the circle, allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while fanning a career-high 14.  She topped her previous mark of 11 she set in her last start against Albright.  This is her third-consecutive start with a double-digit strikeout total.

Church led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance and notched an RBI.  Sterling, Horvath, and Hood had the other three Pride base hits.

In Game Two, both sides were held scoreless until the Warriors struck in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by first baseman Katie Pugh.  The blue and gold finally crossed the plate in the top of the sixth as a Horvath batted ball caused a Warrior error allowing Hood and pinch runner Nicole Cavalier (Burlington, N.J.) to give the Pride a 2-1 advantage.

That would prove to be the only scoring Horvath would need as she improved her record to 8-3 on the rubber.  She surrendered just one run on four hits and four walks while striking uot five.

Senior first baseman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, Pa.) notched two of Widener's four hits in the nightcap, with Alkins and Church recording the other two.

The Pride return to the diamond on Wednesday, Apr. 22 when they host Neumann at the Widener Softball Field for a 4 p.m. non-conference twinbill.
