Softball Split a Pair at Conference-Foe Alvernia; 5-3, 9-13

READING, Pa. (Mar. 30, 2015) – The Widener softball team split a pair of Commonwealth Conference contests with Alvernia at Angelica Park in Reading, Pa. on Monday afternoon.  The Pride earned a 5-3 victory in the opener, before dropping the second match 13-9 in six innings.

In Game One, the Pride did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard as they posted four runs in the opening frame.  Senior first baseman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, Pa.) knocked in Widener's first runs as sophomore third baseman Angela Hood (Mullica Twp., N.J.) and junior shortstop Alie Alkins (Aston, Pa.) came around to score.  Junior right fielder Heather Forward (Philadelphia, Pa.) followed with a double to bring home Harris, and two batters later sophomore left fielder Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) singled in Forward.

The Crusaders answered with one in the bottom of the first, but the visitors got that run back in the top of the fifth to retake the four-run lead.  In the bottom half of the frame, Alvernia pushed across two runs, but it was not enough as sophomore hurler Alexis Schengrund (Hillsborough, N.J.) shut down the Crusader offense for the 5-3 win.

Schengrund improved to 5-0 in the circle with her complete-game win.  She surrendered three runs (none earned) on 11 hits and two walks while fanning five.

Game Two saw an offensive outburst on both sides as Alvernia secured the 13-9 victory.  The home squad took a four-run lead after the first on a homer, RBI groundout, and two-RBI double.  But the Pride answered right back with a five-run second.  Forward recorded a two-RBI double to center followed by a bases-clearing double to left by Alkins.

The blue and gold tacked on another two runs in the next frame when junior catcher Taylor Church (Glen Mills, Pa.) scored Forward and Antonucci with a double to left-center.  They added another two in the top of the fifth as Hood's two-RBI base knock to right gave her squad a 9-4 lead.

The Crusaders' offense then exploded for a three-run fifth and a six-run sixth to secure the win in six innings as darkness led to a shortened game.

The two squads combined for 22 runs and 29 hits in the six-inning affair.

Taylor Fouracre earned the win for Alvernia as she tossed 3.1 innings of relief.

Alkins and Forward each finished the twinbill with four hits, while Alkins knocked in three runs.

The Pride return to the diamond on Tuesday as they host Immaculata in a twinbill starting at 4 p.m.
