GLENSIDE, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2015) – Freshman
Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) smashed 14 kills as the Widener University volleyball team swept Arcadia by a 3-0 decision on Wednesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21.
The first set was a seesaw battle with 11 ties and six lead changes. Despite trailing 8-4 early and 19-16 later in the frame, Widener fought back and rattled off eight unanswered to push the Knights to the brink. Freshman
Kelsey Lee (Chesapeake, Va.), who recorded a service ace to start the game, had a kill to cap the run. After Brionna Cox answered with a kill to keep the hosts alive, a bad set by the freshman allowed the Pride to win the set by a 25-20 score.
The second half was a different story as the Pride never trailed. Dorman recorded a kill and freshman classmate Jane Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) followed with a solo block to allow the visitors to establish control. With the score tied at 2-all, Widener embarked on another 8-0 run with Dorman notching three aces during the stretch and never looked back. Junior
Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) set up Lee for a kill to clinch the set.
Widener got off to a slow start in the third set by yielding the first two points, but the squad recovered by scoring the next four. Dorman smashed a kill to get the Pride going, as the visitors held off every comeback attempt by the Knights and finished the set on a 5-2 run to clinch the match.
Dorman led Widener (11-9, MACC 2-2) and fell just shy of a double-double with 14 kills and nine digs. She also matched a career high with three aces. Other notable contributers were junior
Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) and Lee, who registered with 11 digs and four blocks, respectively. Barbieri contributed 31 assists, four digs and three blocks.
Arcadia (8-9, MACC 2-3), which only hit at a .125 clip in the match, was paced by Makenna Micklaus and Alexia Bell. Micklaus had 10 kills, while Bell finished with 19 assists.
Widener has the weekend off and will then face one of its toughest challenges of the season when it visits Stevenson on Tuesday, Oct. 13 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
