Men's Soccer Closes In On MAC Commonwealth Playoff Spot with Victory Over Alvernia

CHESTER, Pa. (October 28, 2015) – The Widener men's soccer team closed in on a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth playoff spot on Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over Alvernia at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
 
The Pride improved to 8-8-1 and 4-3 in the league, while Alvernia fall to 7-6-5, and 2-4-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
 
Widener recorded three goals in the first half. Tori Remondelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) notched two of those goals less than ten minutes apart. The midfielder opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he blasted home a cross from classmate Ross Staudt (Marlton, N.J.).
 
Remondelli recorded his team leading 11th goal of the season when headed home a cross from freshman Kevin McKenna (North Wales, Pa.). The goal gave the Pride a two-goal advantage in the 30th minute.
 
Senior defender Malik Krcic (Saylorsburg, Pa.) recorded his first goal of the season when he finished a cross from Tommy O'Keefe (Lutherville, Md.) in the 44th minute.
 
The Blue and Gold were outshot by the Crusaders 17-16, but Widener held the advantage on corner kicks five to four. The Pride recorded ten shots on goal, while Alvernia notched eight in the MAC Commonwealth game.
 
Zac Furia (Springfield, Pa.) added an unassisted goal for the Pride in the 59th minute. Freshman Mac Schailey (State College, Pa.) drove down the right sideline from midfield and put home the fifth goal of the game for Widener. Schailey's goal, assisted by Dylan Pratzner (Wallingford, Pa.), was his second goal of the year.
 
Junior David Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) recorded eight saves for his third shutout of the season.
 
Widener will close out the regular season as they take on Lycoming in Williamsports, Pa. at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
