DALLAS, Pa. (Oct. 16, 2015) – Junior
Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) factored into three first-place finishes to propel the Widener University men's swimming team to a 136-62 win over Misericordia in the opening dual meet of the season for both schools on Friday evening. The Pride cruised to victory by capturing nine of the 11 events.
Gaynor won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.20, which was more than four seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and also swam on two winning relays. Freshman
Aaron Green (Camden-Wyoming, Del.) and junior Michael Grajeck (Freehold, N.J.) joined Gaynor on the 200-yard medley and the 200-yard freestyle relays which registered times of 1:58.54 and 1:27.28, respectively, and also earned first-place individual finishes. Green hit the wall in the 100 butterfly in 53.85 seconds and Grajek took the 100 backstroke in 55.46.
Freshman
Samuel Smith (Columbus, Ohio) and junior
Jeffrey Hicks (White Haven, Pa.) were double winners individually in their respective events to help pace the Pride. Smith was victorious in the 500 and 1,000 free in 5:12.75 and 10:51.18, while Hicks notched marks of 22.50 in the 50 free and 48.84 in the 100 free.
Widener (1-0) will host its first dual meet of the season when it entertains Scranton on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
