BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2015) – A double-double by freshman
Nicole Dorman and career efforts from classmates
Kelsey Lee (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) were not enough as the Widener University volleyball team fell to Moravian by a 3-1 score on Thursday evening. The Greyhounds won by set scores of 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-21.
Moravian got off to a quick start and led 6-2 by getting two assists and a kill from Megan Szkolnicki. The Greyhounds built a 12-6 advantage on a Jaclyn Smith kill, but the Pride answered back. Trailing 18-15, the visitors rattled off four straight points and never trailed the rest of the way. After junior
Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) set up Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) for a kill and then added a kill herself to make it 23-20, a pair of attacking errors by the Greyhounds allowed Widener to capture the set by a 25-22 score.
The host school shook off the first set loss and burst out to a 10-3 lead in the second frame on a Mary Zacher kill. Moravian jumped out to an 18-13 advantage, but the Pride once again clawed back and pulled within one on a kill by freshman
Natalie Winn (San Marcos, Calif.) and tied the match at 23s on a Kalinock point with an assist coming from Barbieri. Moravian, however, shook off the comeback effort and got consecutive kills to take the set by a 25-23 decision.
Moravian's wave of momentum carried over into the next frame, as the Greyhounds never trailed in the third set and won by a 25-23 score. Taylor Kornmann recorded a kill to give the hosts their second straight set win by just two points.
The Greyhounds jumped ahead 4-1 in the fourth set before the Pride rallied from behind. Dorman finished a pass from junior
Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) to break the fifth tie and give the visitors a 9-8 advantage and their first lead since the early stages of set two. A seesaw battle then ensued as the teams exchanged leads five more times and stayed within two points of each other until a Zacher kill made it 24-21. Zacher added her second straight kill off a pass from Szkolnicki on match point to give the Greyhounds the win.
Dorman registered her eighth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs to lead the way for Widener. Barbieri also had a double-double with 33 assists and 13 digs. In addition, the junior captain registered six kills and did not record an attacking error. Elliott posted a team-leading 16 digs, while Kalinock set a career mark with seven blocks. Lee finished with a career-best 15 digs and matched a career high with six blocks.
Moravian (12-13) was led by Zacher's 20-kill effort. She also added 14 digs. Jean Markovic had 29 digs and three aces, which were both game highs, and Szkolnicki posted a double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs.
