Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Blanks Wilkes, 2-0

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 13, 2015) – Juniors Brittany Lavin (Phillipsburg, N.J.) and Alyssa Buckley (Flourtown, Pa.) each found the back of the cage to lift the Widener University field hockey team to a 2-0 triumph over Wilkes on Tuesday evening at Schmidt Stadium. The Pride scored one goal and each half and had a commanding 32-15 advantage in shot attempts to register their sixth win of the season.

The Pride dominated much of the first half and got on the board in the 15th minute when Lavin finished a pass from junior captain Colleen Riley (Tannersville, Pa.). It was the junior's third marker of the season, as the teams headed to recess with the visitors leading by a 1-0 score.

Wilkes (7-7) came out stronger in the second half and had numerous attempts to net the equalizer. Marissa Sturdy nearly found the back of the cage twice, but Pride freshman defender Gabrielle Kilpatrick (Hainesport, N.J.) recorded a defensive save on one of her shots in the opening minutes and another hit the post with just over 22 minutes left.

After several close calls, Widener responded at the other end by firing a barrage of shots at goalkeeper Dallas Kendra in the late stages of regulation and got insurance when Buckley potted her own rebound in the 67th minute. The putback allowed the Pride to run away with the two-goal decision.

Kendra did all she could between the pipes for Wilkes and made 16 saves in the losing effort. Pride junior goalkeeper Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, Pa.) turned away nine shots to pick up the shutout win.

Widener (6-5) resumes conference play when it visits 17th-ranked Messiah on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
