Cabrini Sweeps Volleyball at the Schwartz Center

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University volleyball team fell to Cabrini by a 3-0 decision on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Schwartz Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19.

Both teams hit at an identical .286 clip during the first set which the Cavaliers captured by a two-point margin after 10 ties and three lead changes. Cabrini (10-5) stormed out to an 8-3 lead by getting two straight kills from Chelsea Jones off feeds from Cassidy Koenig, but Widener rallied and answered with an 8-2 run and went ahead 13-12 when Kelly Guarino was charged with a ball handling error. After a Nicole Dorman (East Norriton, Pa.) kill made it 23-22 in favor of the hosts, Cabrini closed the set with three straight points to establish control.

Riding the serving arm of Guarino, the Cavaliers scored six unanswered early in the second set to burst out to a 10-3 lead. Widener came no closer than five the rest of the way and trailed by as many as 12 before Jones ended it with a kill. The Cavaliers held the Pride to an .031 hitting percentage in the frame.

Widener was more competitive in the third set, but the visitors took control early again and still prevailed. After junior Brianna Harrington (Sewell, N.J.) and freshman Janie Kalinock (Ellicott City, Md.) teamed up for two blocks in a row to close the gap to 13-11, Cabrini came out of a timeout and responded with the next two points to begin pulling away. A Guarino kill that was set up by Christen Ingargiola clinched the match for the Cavaliers.

Three players recorded double-digit marks for the Pride, as junior Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, Pa.) finished with 32 assists, junior Lauren Elliott (Aston, Pa.) registered 17 digs and Dorman had 14 kills. Kalinock ended the game with four blocks.

Nicole Sokolovich led Cabrini with 13 kills, which included being a perfect 6-for-6 on attack attempts in the opening set, to go along with 10 digs. Koening also had a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs.

Widener (9-8) visits FDU-Florham for MAC Crossover play on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Pride will face Manhattanville at 2:00 p.m. and the host school at 4:00 p.m.
