Volleyball Drops a Pair at the Haverford Invitational


Widener ran into two tough foes in 3-0 losses to 22nd-ranked UMass Boston (19-25, 16-25, 23-25) and Susquehanna (15-25, 14-25, 17-25) at the Haverford Invitational in Haverford, PA.
 
Widener battled in the third set against UMass Boston, which last season competed in the NCAA quarterfinals.  The Pride had nine kills in the set and led on the scoreboard most of the way before succumbing.
 
Sabrina Barbieri (Glen Mills, PA) had 20 assists, fellow sophomore Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA) amassed nine digs and six kills with sophomore Lauren Elliott (Aston, PA) adding eight digs.
 
Julia Murphy closed with 10 kills and Emma Rocha added 21 assists for the Beacons (1-2).
 
Susquehanna, which had 29 wins last season, was another formidable opponent with 17 kills in the first set and 43 overall.  The Pride had 12 kills in the third set and gave the Crusaders a run in that span.
 
Barbieri had another strong match with 23 assists, senior Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) totaled 13 digs and Ruditys amassed eight and five kills for the Pride (0-4).
 
Erin Byrne posted nine kills with Maggie O'Hearn adding 30 assists for the Crusaders (3-0).
 
Widener on Tuesday plays its home opener against former Commonwealth Conference-rival Moravian, beginning at 7:00 pm.
