Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Surrenders Late Goal in 1-0 Loss at Swarthmore

Widener kept Swarthmore off the scoreboard until the 87th minute, when it was breached for the game's lone goal in a 1-0 season-opening loss.

Widener was playing its first match since graduating seven seniors from last year's squad which went 14-3-3 and broke the school records with an 11-game winning streak, a 12-game unbeaten run, 12 shutouts and a six-game shutout streak.  It tied the school record with nine home victories, recorded at least 11 overall wins for the sixth time in eight seasons and fell one overall victory shy of the school record.

It also was the first game at Widener for coach Todd Wawrousek, who came over after notching a 195-108-19 record in 17 seasons at Gettysburg.

Swarthmore still possessed a goose egg on the scoreboard thanks to two great saves from Widener junior goalkeeper Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, PA) early in the second half.  She stoned Hanna Lichtenstein in the 50th minute and then stopped Melissa Trofa one minute later.

But the Garnet came through with 3:14 remaining.  Substitute Mele Johnson won a loose ball near the top of the box and tallied into a wide-open net.

Pfautz made six saves and freshman Eva Reyes (Cranbury, NJ) had a shot for the Pride (0-1).

Reba Magier and Caela Long each played 45 minutes in net for the Garnet.  Lichtenstein and Ellen Bachmannhuff took four shots apiece.

Widener is back in action Sunday at Bryn Mawr, starting at 1:00 pm.
