(box score)

Widener played hard for a full 60 minutes, but dropped a 16-11 Commonwealth Conference game to Messiah on Tuesday night at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (2-9, 2-2 CC) laid in striking distance of its league foe for the entirety of the game.  It was not until the last five minutes that Messiah began to pull away on the scoreboard.

The Pride were a perfect 13-of-13 on clear attempts in the contest and shot 75 percent on goal as a team.  "We were very patient tonight.  We were able to complete a lot of passes, and look for good opportunities," said head coach Julie Mazer.  "One or two more things go our way and that would have been a completely different game.  I was very proud of how the team played as a whole tonight."

Messiah (6-6, 3-1) began the game with two straight goals from Lizzy Keeney off passes from teammate Madi Brunk.  Brunk finished the contest with six assists and one goal of her own.

The Pride got their first goal with 17 minutes remaining in the half from junior Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) on a shot from the left side past the Falcons' goalie to make the score 2-1.  Sailey finished the day with three goals on four shots and two groundballs.

Junior attack Pinky Schneider (Morrestown, NJ) scored four minutes later off a pass from junior Megan Granata (Broomall, PA).  Schneider matched her season high of four goals, and now stands first on the team with 24 goals and 29 points on the season.

At the end of the first half, Messiah held a 5-3 advantage.

Messiah scored the opening three goals of the half, but Widener fought back to score three of the next four.  Sophomore attack Megan Mills (Riverton, NJ) scored her first of two goals on the day to jumpstart the pride, followed by junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) getting an unassisted goal from the right side.  Lindquist led the team with nine draw controls in the contest.

Mills scored with 8:37 remaining in the game off a pass from Granata to pull the Pride within two.  Messiah, led by two goals from Jenna Stover, halted the Widener momentum and secured victory.

Junior goalie Megan Dunn (Oxford, NJ) made 11 saves in the contest to bring her season total to 98 saves.

Widener will next travel to Lycoming on Saturday to continue Commonwealth Conference play at 1:00 pm.
