Megan Dunn Makes 17 Saves in Women's Lacrosse's 15-7 Loss to Susquehanna

(box score)

Widener fell short of Susquehanna, 15-7, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener (2-8, 2-1) fell behind early in the contest and then started to make a comeback late in the first half.  However, the powerful play of the Crusaders in the second half proved too much for the young Pride team.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Dunn (Oxford, NJ) matched her season high of 17 saves to bring her season total to 87 thus far in 2014.   "Dunn made some unbelievable saves; she played out of her mind," said Widener coach Julie Mazer

Susquehanna scored the first four goals of the contest before senior Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) found junior Pinky Schneider (Morrestown, NJ) on the right side to put the Pride on the scoreboard.  Albano returned less than two minutes later to add a goal of her own off an assist from junior Megan Granata (Bromall, PA).

Susquehanna took a 7-2 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the opening period.  Widener returned to shut out Susquehanna for an entire 13 minutes and manage three goals of its own to make the score 7-5.  Junior midfielders Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) and Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) each scored an unassisted goal, followed by freshman Brooke Clasing (Shrewsbury, PA) on a free-position shot for the first goal of her collegiate career.

At halftime, Susquehanna held a 9-5 advantage over the Pride on 23 shots to Widener's 14.  The Pride did lead with 10 first half draw controls thanks to Lindquist, who finished with a team-leading six in the contest.

Twenty seconds into the second period, Schneider found sophomore Lindsey Brust (Pennsburg, PA) in front of the net for her first goal of the season to pull within three.

Susquehanna (6-3, 3-0) then scored five straight goals to pull away from Widener, including three goals in a row from senior Emma Ehler.  Meredith Crane, Brynn Reid and Michelle McGinniss and Ehler would all finish with three goals apiece for the Crusaders.

Widener will be back in action on Tuesday against Commonwealth Conference-foe Messiah on Edith R. Dixon Field beginning at 7:00 pm.
