Baseball Rolls to 7-0 triumph at Neumann

(box score)

Widener rapped eight hits and limited Neumann to just three for a convincing 7-0 victory in non-conference play in Aston, PA.

Widener (23-10) got all the runs it would need in the third inning by plating two en route to its 12th victory in the last 13 outings.  A misplayed grounder off the bat of freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) scored senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) and an error off a grounder from freshman Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) plated Elfreth.

The Pride got three more in the sixth for a 5-0 margin.  Freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) got an RBI single up the middle and freshman Greg McDonough (Ambler, PA) got the big rip with a two-run triple to right-center field.

Senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) brought down the curtain on the scoring in the seventh inning, launching a two-run homer for his first long ball of the season and second career.

Minersville, PA sophomore Shawn Barton (2-0) struck out five over 7 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and one walk.  Elfreth ended with two hits, giving him a team-leading 19 multi-hit contests this season.

Jeremy Hutchison (1-3) struck out eight for the Knights (13-14), but permitted four runs – one earned – and four hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Widener is back in action Tuesday at Rowan, starting at 3:30 pm in Glassboro, NJ.
