Baseball Uses the Long Ball in 9-0 Victory at Misericordia

Widener got a pair of two-run home runs and solid pitching in cruising to a 9-0 triumph at Misericordia for its second shutout of the season in Dallas, PA.
 
The Pride took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) lined an RBI single up the middle.  The margin grew to 3-0 in the second when junior Paul Shepherd (Secane, PA), the reigning Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week, lined a two-run single.
 
Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) continued when has been a solid freshman campaign by blasting a two-run homer to left center to put Widener up, 5-0.  Barnett got his season-best third RBI of the season in the fifth on a run-scoring groundout and Shepherd crossed home on a wild pitch in the sixth for a 7-0 margin.
 
Junior Edward Speakman (Chichester, PA), like Barnett, got his first career home run as his two-run blast in the seventh closed the scoring for Widener's fifth straight win and its longest winning streak since 2011.
 
Brookhaven, PA senior Glenn Stanners (2-3) gave Widener nine strong innings, posting a career-best nine strikeouts and allowing eight hits for the team's first individual shutout of the season and his first career shutout.  Speakman, Scherer, Barnett, Shepherd, Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) and fellow freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) all had two hits for the Pride (16-9).
 
Mike Bernet gave up five runs and seven hits over three innings for the Cougars (15-9-1).  Kyle Seawards had two hits.
 
Widener, which notched a 7-0 victory over Arcadia on March 22, is back on the road Friday at Albright in Commonwealth Conference play, starting at 3:30 pm.
