Widener ran into some tough pitching and was handed a 2-1 loss at TCNJ on Tuesday in Ewing, NJ.
After giving up an early lead, Widener (11-9) kept the game within reaching distance via the performance of its pitching staff. On the mound, the Pride allowed only five hits and two runs to the Lions.
Six different pitchers saw action for the Pride, highlighted by senior Glenn Stanners (Brookhaven, PA) with three innings and one strikeout, as well as sophomore Dominick Mancuso (Easton, Pa) with 1 2/3 innings and two strikeouts.
Widener feel behind in the top of the first inning after TCNJ's John Limon singled up the middle to drive home teammate Joe Dispoto.
The lead was increased in the third inning when a sacrifice fly from Pat Roberts would drive home the Lion's Garen Turner.
In the top of the fifth inning, junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) led off with a single to left field. Scherer advanced to second on a bunt from freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ), then to third base on a groundout from junior Paul Shephard (Secane, PA). After a wild pitch to the next batter, Scherer advanced home to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Lions. Scherer stands second on the team with 20 runs and 25 hits on the season.
Widener nearly tied the game in the seventh inning when Healey singled to right center and then stole second to put himself in scoring position with two outs in the inning. On the next pitch, Shephard connected on a ball, but the Lion's shortstop was able to make the play at first to save the game for TCNJ. Healey is 5-of-5 on stolen base opportunities this season.
Making his first start for the Pride at designated hitter, freshman Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, NJ) went 1-of-3 with a walk to lead the Pride at the plate.
Widener returns to action Friday at Stevenson in Commonwealth Conference action, beginning at 3:30 pm.
