Women's Lacrosse Falls, 12-8, to Alvernia

(box score)

A second-half rally put Widener back into the contest, but it was not enough in being handed a 12-8 loss by Alvernia in both teams Commonwealth Conference opener at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Crusaders scored five straight goals bridging both halves to take a 10-3 lead in the first minute of the second half.  Five different players found the back of the net in that span with Julie Sutton capping the burst only 22 seconds into the stanza.

The Pride then netted the next three goals to gain momentum and close to 10-6 with 18:21 to play.  Junior Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) scored twice in that run and senior Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) added one.

Sutton got one back for Alvernia with 13:38 left for an 11-6 margin, but Widener again fought back.  Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) scored with 10:18 left and fellow junior Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) tallied with 8:55 remaining for an 11-8 contest.

But the Crusaders' defense tightened up on the Pride, limiting the home team to only four shots the rest of the way.

Albano had two goals and an assist with Lindquist netting a pair for Widener (0-7, 0-1 CC).  Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, PA) and fellow sophomore Megan Mills (Riverton, NJ) also scored with junior Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) making nine saves.

Junior Megan Capobianco (Clementon, NJ) also played great for the Pride with team highs of seven caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Sutton had three goals and an assist, Candace Knight scored three times, Jacquelyn Strange netted two and Colleen Reilly made 18 saves for the Crusaders (5-3, 1-0).

Widener hits the road Saturday to visit Hood for another league game, starting at 1:00 pm in Frederick, MD.
