Exciting Baseball Game Results in 7-5 Loss to St. John Fisher

(box score)

Widener's five-game winning streak was snapped by St. John Fisher on Sunday, 7-5, in Chester, PA.

The Pride (10-5) revealed in the back and forth game they have the skills to compete with almost anyone. St. John Fisher (12-1) entered after receiving votes in the latest D3Baseball.com poll, but Widener did not back down and took the lead heading into the eighth inning.

The scoring began in the second inning when St. John Fisher's Joe Simmons doubled down the left-field line that drove home two runs. The Cardinals added one more run in the fourth when Cody Wiktorski advanced home on a wild pitch.

Widener's offense got on a roll in the fifth inning when junior Edward Speakman (Chichester, PA) led off with a double to right field. Freshman second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) drove home Speakman with a single to center field. Speakman finished 2-of-4 with an RBI and Healey led the Pride with two RBI.

Two batters later, freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp, NJ) laid down a superb bunt that allowed him to reach first and Healey to score from third. Still in the fifth inning, senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) stole third and off a St. John Fisher throwing error, Christie came home to tie the score, 3-3.

The Cardinals took the lead in the sixth inning, 4-3, but the Pride made another comeback to score two runs in the bottom of the inning. Speakman hit his second double of the day to bring home junior Josh Everett (Harveys Lake, PA), followed by a sacrifice fly from Healey that brought home junior Michael Rytelewski (Brick, NJ).

St. John Fisher wrapped the game in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded triple from Brad Rush to make the score 7-5.

Widener's fielding was crucial in keeping within striking distance throughout the game. Widener made one error, to its opponents six. Elfreth made five assists from third base, three of which required Elfreth to dive and then throw a frozen rope to senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) at first.

Starting the game on the mound, freshman Donovan Davis (Wallingford, PA) pitched five innings for the Pride, and striking out two batters in a no decision. The victory went to the Cardinals' Josh Amann with a save from teammate Ryan Smith.

Widener returns to action Monday at Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth Conference action, beginning at 3:30 pm.
