Women's Lacrosse Dealt Heartbreaking 11-10 Loss by Kean

(box score)

Widener raced to a five-goal lead by before halftime, but permitted Kean to come storming back with eight second-half tallies for a tough 11-10 setback at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Widener had all the momentum in the first half, opening a 7-2 lead during a period in which it was outshot 15-10.  Juniors Mackenzie Lindquist (Ocean City, NJ) and Melissa Sailey (Swedesboro, NJ) each scored twice in that run with sophomore Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, PA), Pinky Schneider (Moorestown, NJ) and fellow junior Megan Granata (Broomall, PA) also tallying.

Maggie Brocklebank scored a key marker for the Cougars with four seconds left to make it 7-3 at halftime and then her team rattled off three more after that for a 7-6 margin.  Samantha Gnapp scored the capper with 24:42 left.

Schneider tallied with 20:40 to play for an 8-6 contest before Jordan Blanda and Meghan Schnek scored just over two minutes apart for an 8-8 tie with 14:42 left.

Sailey scored with 11:20 remaining to give the Pride a 9-8 lead before Ciara Mastrodomenico tied it with 8:49 left and Schneck gave Kean its first lead, 10-9, with 6:51 to go.

Lindquist was awarded a free-position shot and buried it with 5:56 remaining for a 10-10 tie.  After Kean was whistled for a card and was a player down, it got the ball back on a turnover before Carly Seidel scored a free-position tally with 3:06 left for an 11-10 margin.

Sailey forced a turnover with just over two minutes left and the Pride had another chance to tie.  But a shot from senior Amy Albano (Columbia, MD) sailed wide and the Cougars killed off the remaining time.

Sailey and Lindquist scored three times each, Schneider netted two and sophomore Megan Mills (Riverton, NJ) had two assists and four draw controls for Widener (0-6).  Junior Megan Dunn (Oxford, PA) again played great in goal with 11 saves.

Schneck scored four goals with Schnek and Blanda each getting two for Kean (5-2).  Daniella Wagenti amassed two saves.

Widener opens Commonwealth Conference play at home Wednesday against Alvernia, starting at 7:00 pm.
