Baseball Takes Two Over Arcadia

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener completed the season sweep of Arcadia with two Commonwealth Conference wins, 5-2 and 7-0, in Chester, PA on Saturday.

Widener (8-5, 3-1 CC) defeated Arcadia on Friday, 12-3, before returning home to face off for a Saturday doubleheader.

The Pride continued their five-game winning streak with dominating pitching performance from senior Colin Weiss (Red Hill, PA) and sophomore Joe Santone (Blackwood, NJ). Weiss pitched six innings, with one earned run and five strikeouts to gain the victory in the opening game. Santone kept it going in the following game with 5 1/3 scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Senior utility Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore Kevin Scisorek (Hillsborough, NJ) were each credited with a save on the afternoon. Riverso clinched the first game with three straight outs. Scisorek entered the second game with bases loaded and only one out, but was able to get Arcadia's Taylor Schon to ground into a double play to end the top of the sixth.

Arcadia led the first game 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Junior right fielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) then got up to the plate and nailed a homerun over the left field wall that drove home two runners and gave Widener a 3-1 lead. Scherer becomes the first Pride player to hit a home run in 2014 and now ranks second on the team with 12 RBI.

The Pride added one more in the fourth when senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) singled up the middle and freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) rounded third and beat the throw at the plate.

Freshman pinch runner Greg McDonough (Ambler, PA) secured the 5-2 victory when he advanced home on an error from Arcadia's shortstop.

The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when junior Josh Everett (Harveys Lake, PA) scored on an error by the Arcadia second baseman.

Arcadia struggled in the field, making three more errors in the sixth inning that allowed Widener to score six late runs.

Freshman designated hitter Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) led the Pride with two RBI and one run in the second game. Barnett now leads the team with 17 runs and a .542 slugging percentage.

Arcadia (2-9, 1-3) was led by George Pagen with three hits on the day, and Robert Roth with an RBI single late in the first game.

Widener returns to action at home Sunday against St. John Fisher, beginning at 1:00 pm.
