High-Scoring Innings Lead Baseball Past Arcadia, 12-3

Junior pitcher Robert Barth (Norristown, PA) remained undefeated in helping Widener to a 12-3 Commonwealth Conference victory over Arcadia on Friday afternoon in Glenside, PA.

Widener (8-4, 2-1 CC) continued its three-game winning streak on the shoulders of Barth's seven-inning, six-strikeout, two earned-run performance. Barth improves to 4-0 on the season with an ERA of 1.43 and a team-leading 27 strikeouts.

Barth had a great deal of room to work with thanks to seven runs in the first two innings from his teammates at the plate. Senior infielder Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) got things started for the Pride with a two-RBI single in the top of the first inning. Riverso has six multiple RBI games this season, and leads the team with 19 RBI and a .585 slugging percentage.

Junior outfielder Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) continued in the second inning with a single that drove home freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp, NJ). Scherer has reached base in all 12 games this season, and continued that streak against the Knights with three hits, three runs and an RBI.

Junior shortstop Michael Rytelewski (Brick, NJ) then hit a single up the middle that drove home Scherer and Riverso. Rytelewski finished with three RBI and two hits.

Leading 8-1 in the sixth inning, Widener went back to work led by an RBI single from junior Edward Speakman (Chichester, PA). Speakman scored on the next play when Rytelewski hit a double to deep center field.

In the eighth inning with a 12-3 lead, Widener turned to freshman Nick Donovan (Aston, PA) to seal the victory. Donovan struck out one and allowed only one hit in two innings.

Arcadia (2-7, 1-1 CC) was lead by Elliott Freeman with two hits, one run and one RBI and Justin Chasmar with two hits and a walk.

Widener looks to continue its winning streak at home tomorrow in a doubleheader against Arcadia, beginning at noon.
