Riverso’s Two-Run Single Caps Ninth-Inning Rally for Baseball in 6-5 Victory Over Thiel

(box score)

Senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) lined a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap Widener's three-run rally for a 6-5 triumph over Thiel in Fort Myers, FL.

Down 5-3 entering the last of the ninth, Widener turned to a freshman pinch hitter to start things and Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) came through with a walk. Freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) singled and sophomore pinch hitter Joe Santone (Blackwood, NJ) intended to sacrifice, but his bunt turned into a single to load the bases.

Still with none out, junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-4 contest and send Riverso to the plate. The Pride's first baseman left no doubt by lining one up the middle to score Elfreth and Santone for the squad's second victory on the trip in three tries.

Riverso continued his stellar beginning to 2014 with two hits, a double and four RBI. It was his second multi-hit contest in the young season for Widener (3-1).

Elfreth closed with three hits and two runs, Scherer had three hits, two RBI and a run with senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) also getting three hits.

Junior Robert Barth (Norristown, PA) pitched 7 2/3 innings for the Pride in a no-decision, yielding five runs and 11 hits with a strikeout. Freshman Joseph Richie (Reading, PA) notched his first collegiate victory, tossing a perfect top of the ninth inning.

The Tomcats (0-1) scored all of their runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 5-3 lead.

Widener returns to the field Monday against John Carroll for a 10:00 am start in Fort Myers, FL.
