Widener held a shutout into the seventh inning, but gave up five late runs to Rutgers-Camden in a 5-2 loss in Camden, NJ.
Widener (6-3) began the scoring in the second inning. Senior first baseman Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) reached on a throwing error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior catcher Paul Shepherd (Secane, PA) and freshman second baseman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) each walked to load the bases with two outs in the inning. Senior center fielder Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) came through in the clutch with a two-run single that scored both Riverso and Shepherd.
Christie now totals three RBI on the season and eight hits. Riverso continues to lead the Pride in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Widener held onto that 2-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Rutgers-Camden's Joe Theckston hit an RBI double, followed by a run on a throwing error to give the Scarlet Raptors a 3-2 lead. Rutgers-Camden added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final.
Sophomore pitcher Joe Santone (Blackwood, NJ) took the mound for the Pride and pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and only four hits with three strikeouts for the no-decision. The win would be earned by Ron Reagan after pitching four innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts.
Another notable pitching performance for the Pride was from freshman Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, PA). Facing only two batters, McKelvy finished the eighth inning for Widener by striking out one batter and getting the second to line out to second base.
Junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) had a single in the third inning to extend his hitting streak this season to nine games. Counting last year, he actually has an 11-game hitting streak that matches his career best.
Widener will host conference opponent Lebanon Valley in a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon.
