Women's Lacrosse Drops Hard-Fought Battle to Arcadia, 15-11

(box score)

Widener saw its opening game of the 2014 season against Arcadia slip away, 15-11, on Saturday afternoon in Glenside, PA.

Widener (0-1) held the lead for most of the first half, but a late run from Arcadia secured the victory.

Three minutes into the game, junior Megan Granata (Broomall, PA) kicked off the scoring with an unassisted goal from the left side.  Granata finished with two goals on a team-leading eight shots and one assist.

Arcadia went on a run to score the next four goals within a span of nine minutes.  The Pride answered right back with five straight goals of their own to regain the lead, 6-4.  Sophomore starter Caitlyn Mullner (Aston, PA) began the stampede with a goal, followed two minutes later by an assist to Granata.  Mullner had two goals, one assist, and picked up two ground balls in the contest.

With minutes remaining in the half, Arcadia scored a goal to pull within one.  However with time ticking down, junior Pinky Schneider (Morrestown, NJ) drove to the net and put a shot past the keeper to give the Pride a two-goal lead with one second remaining in the half.  Schneider finished the game with two goals, a team-leading three assists and one draw control.

Widener came out inspired in the second half, but it was Arcadia who scored three early goals to steal the lead back from the Pride.

With 12 minutes remaining, Widener fought back to tie the game with two unassisted goals within 14 seconds of each other from sophomore Megan Mills (Riverton, NJ) and freshman Angie Baricko (Toms River, NJ).  Mills and Baricko both came off the bench to add three shots and a goal for the Pride.

The Knights then hit another streak with four goals within five minutes to lock up the victory.  Arcadia improves to 3-0 on the season led by Haylee Molloy with five goals, and Dawn Faranetta with four goals and one assist.

The Pride led 37-23 in shots, but the 15 saves by Arcadia's Jordyn Dunacusky proved to be the difference.

Widener returns to action against Neumann on Thursday at 1:00 pm.  The game will be played in St. Petersburg, FL at a neutral location.
