Men's Basketball Posts 57-51 Victory Over Stevenson

(box score)

Junior Greg Lawson (Mount Holly, NJ) hauled in a career-best 22 rebounds to go with 11 points for Widener, which held off Stevenson for a 57-51 Commonwealth Conference victory at Schwartz Center.

Contrary to the 105-100 contest Stevenson won on January 4, this encounter saw defense reign as the visitors went more than four minutes late in the contest without a basket.  Widener scored eight straight points over four minutes for a 54-47 lead with 2:30 left, thanks to four points from senior Andrew Radomicki (Media, PA).

After Alfonzo Hawkins' two free throws with 2:13 remaining and his layup with 1:26 left, the Mustangs closed to 54-51.  Junior Dillon Fields (Medford, NJ) hit one free throw for a 55-51 margin with 51 seconds to play before Hawkins committed a crucial turnover.

Sophomore Laron Byrd (Philadelphia, PA) hit once from the line with 32 seconds left and Lawson followed suit with 13 seconds remaining for the final.

Lawson was too much in the paint, besting his previous high of 21 rebounds set February 6, 2013 at Elizabethtown to notch his 12th double-double of the season.  He entered the contest eighth in the country in rebounds and 14th in double-doubles.

Fields scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting with four 3-pointers and Byrd added 14 for the Pride (10-10, 4-9 CC), who shot 41 percent (18-of-44) from the field.

Hawkins scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and Justin Kuntz netted 13 points for Stevenson (13-7, 8-5), which shot only 27 percent (7-of-26) from the field in the second half and 40 percent (19-of-47) overall.

Widener is back on the road Saturday at Hood, starting at 3:00 pm.
