Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Pulls Away Late For 67-57 Triumph Over Neumann

Widener put on the defensive clamps late in the contest and pulled away en route to a 67-57 victory over Neumann at Schwartz Center.

The Knights (2-1) grabbed a 51-50 lead with 8:01 left when Holly McKaig hit a layup, but that would be the visitor's last basket for 5 1/2 minutes.  The Pride, with the score level at 52, used a 13-1 run to open a 65-53 lead with 2:32 remaining thanks to three points each from Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ), fellow junior Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) and freshman Julia Venturelli (Bridgewater, NJ).

Neumann would not get another basket until McKaig hit an innocuous layup with 2:05 to go and the margin still in double figures.

Widener (3-1) in the second half limited Neumann to just 30 percent (11-of-37) shooting and forced it to go only 1-of-8 from 3-point range.  The Pride for the game shot 18-for-28 from the line and the Knights were 11-for-21.

Freshman Allison Gallagher (Souderton, PA) had 16 points, senior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) contributed 14 and eight rebounds, senior Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) scored 14 points and Wylie hauled in 10 rebounds for the Pride.  Ferrucci dished eight assists to match her career high, had five steals to fall one short of her personal best and scored nine points.

McKaig netted 20 points, Jessica Schlesman had 16 and seven assists and Ericka Smith-Sowell added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Knights.

Widener is back on the court Tuesday at Wesley, starting at 6:00 pm in Dover, DE.
