Women's Soccer Handed 5-0 Loss at No. 2 Messiah

Widener ran into one of the best teams it will face all season and was dealt a 5-0 loss by second-ranked Messiah in both teams Commonwealth Conference opener in Grantham, PA.

The Falcons did not waste any time, getting a goal in the fourth minute when Nikki Elsaesser found the back of the net.  The margin grew to 2-0 in the 13th minute as Kyele Bridel tallied her own unassisted marker.

Messiah (11-0, 1-0 CC) kept on the pressure and drew another marker in the 31st minute, this time from Holly Burgard off a feed from Macaulay Soto.  Missy Biener tallied in the 43rd minute before Burgard scored 30 seconds into the second half on Erin Sollenberger's feed.

Widener (3-5-2, 0-1), which had gained a result in three of its last four matches, battled to the very end.  Junior Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, PA), who has been solid in net this season entering the match with a 0.94 goal against average, made a career-best 11 saves.

Nikki Elsaesser closed with five shots and Audra Larson played all 90 minutes for the Falcons.

Widener is back on the road Tuesday at Alvernia, starting at 7:00 pm in Reading, PA.
