Volleyball Clinches Conference-Tournament Berth Despite Loss at LVC

The despair of a tough 3-2 Commonwealth Conference loss (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 6-15) at Lebanon Valley in Annville, PA quickly was eradicated when Widener learned it will compete in the league tournament.

The Pride nailed down their seventh trip to the conference tournament in the last eight years thanks to Albright's 3-0 loss at Messiah earlier tonight.  Widener will be the fifth seed and visit fourth-seeded Lycoming in the first round next Monday at 7:00 pm in Williamsport, PA.

Widener (6-23, 3-4 CC) owns a potential tiebreaker over Arcadia thanks to a 3-1 victory in Chester on October 8.

The fifth set looked like it would belong to sophomore Brooke Ruditys (Upper Chichester, PA), who had three kills early on to bring Widener within 5-4.  But the Dutchmen ended the set on a 10-2 run with seven of their 10 kills in the stanza, thanks to three from Emily Sides.

Ruditys had yet another solid match with 14 kills and 18 digs for her team-leading 12th double-double of the year.  Jessica Dembeck (Philadelphia, PA) had 12 kills and a .258 hitting percentage, fellow senior Victoria Miller (West Chester, PA) added 17 digs and senior Kaitlin Schnalzer (Bethlehem, PA) notched 10.

Barbieri had 37 assists on the night and now has 1,644 for her career, already putting herself fourth in school history.

Greta Weidemoyer notched 15 kills, Kayla Confer had 14, Alli Quirk recorded 13, Allie Garrett posted 25 digs, Morgan Webb had 14 and Kacey Musselman amassed 51 assists for the Dutchmen (24-5, 6-1).  LVC owned a 70-51 kills edge and had a .201 hitting percentage.

Widener closes the regular season Thursday at home on Senior Night against Albright, starting at 7:00 pm.
