Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls to No. 18 Messiah

Widener fought hard against one of the top teams in the country, but fell to No. 18 Messiah, 6-0, in Commonwealth Conference play at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Messiah (10-6, 4-2 CC) opened the scoring in the seventh minute off the stick of Carissa Gehman.  Gehman scored again in the 10th minute to  give the Falcons a two-goal advantage.

Sophomore Brittany Lavin (Phillipsburg, NJ) recorded a shot on goal for Widener (4-11, 1-5).

Senior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) recorded five saves for the Pride.

Prior to the game, Karmeris was honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities. The senior has made an impact on the field and in the classroom as she was named Capital One CoSIDA third team Academic All-America last year. Karmeris has finished in the conference's top 10 each season in saves, save percentage and saves per game.

In a show of sportsmanship, Widener coach Larissa Gillespie recognized the three seniors on Messiah for their dedication to the sport of field hockey and their work in the classroom.

Widener will close the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Alvernia in conference action at 6:00 pm at Edith R. Dixon Field.
