Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Ends Season With 1-0 Loss to Alvernia

Going against a squad which had everything to play for, Widener put forth a solid defensive effort before coming up on the wrong end of a 1-0 Commonwealth Conference loss to Alvernia at Edith R. Dixon Field.

The Pride battled and came up with many great defensive plays to keep the game scoreless into the second half.  Sophomore Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) had a solid game all over the field to take pressure off the goalkeepers.

Senior Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, DE) made three saves in the first half for Widener (4-12, 1-6 CC) and sophomore Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, PA) had five over the final 35 minutes.

But the Crusaders (11-7, 5-2) clinched a spot in the conference tournament thanks to Summer Liberto's goal in the 38th minute.  After Ninos made two saves off shots in front from Margaret Wentzel, Liberto collected a loose ball and knocked home her sixth goal of the season.

Wentzel closed with five shots and Paige Epler had three for Alvernia, which ended with 13.

Tonight marks the end of a great career for Karmeris, who last season was picked third team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America to become one of 51 so honored in school history.  She also is a three-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll and last year was named to the MAC Academic All-Conference Teams, the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and a Scholar of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
