First Place Finishes Propel Swimming Past Misericordia

Widener men's and women's swimming each had a strong showing in their first dual meet of the season, as they both defeated Misericordia with scores of 113-92 on the men's side and 103-96 on the women's side in Chester, Pa.
 
For the men, reigning MAC Swimmer of the Year Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) led Widener (1-0) with three first place finishes. The sophomore placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 45.87.
 
Gaynor helped the Pride to two first place finishes in the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle. The 200 yard medley relay comprised of senior Andrew Olochwecky (Philadelphia, Pa), junior Andy Madore (State College, Pa), and sophomore Jeffery Hicks (White Haven, Pa) finished the race in 1:38.91. Gaynor teamed up with classmates Jeremy Lahn (Philadelphia, Pa) and Michael Grajek (Freehold, NJ), as well as freshman Tom Platt (Wallingford, Pa), to win the race in 1:27.18.
 
Senior Vadim Belogordsky (Huntingdon Valley, Pa) finished first in the 1000 yard freestyle race in 10:50.92, just under three seconds ahead of the next finisher. The senior placed third in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:23.46.

Miserircorida (0-1) earned a first place finishes from Thomas Scott in the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard IM.
 
For the women, Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, MN) led the Pride with one first place finish and two second place finishes. The sophomore finished the 200 yard IM in first place with a time of 2:17.89.
 
Neugebauer also finished second in the 100 yard breastroke with a time of 1:10.52. The sophomore help the 200 yard medley relay to a second place finish. The team comprised of junior Annie Walker (New Castle, DE), sophomore Melaney Heald (Georgetown, DE) and freshman Christine Kunzler (Livermore, CA), finished in 1:55.49.

Kunzler finished first in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke. In the 50 yard freestyle, the freshman finished in 25.75. Kunzler completed her first place performance in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.94.The freshman led the Pride 200 yard medley relay to a second place finish.
 
Anna Pelligra (Manasquan, NJ) finished first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:44.13. The sophomore placed fourth in the 100 yard freestyle race with a time of 1:00.03.

The Cougars earned a first place finish from Dani Blass in the 100 yard breastroke.
 
Widener will be back in the pool on Saturday as they host Scranton at 1:00 pm at the Aquatic Center.
